Brexit, Taxation and Mobility Planning: Right Questions, Right People, Right Now
Some claim that only two things in life are certain: death and taxes. And for now, we would add a third: Brexit.
Mobility Programmes encompass many elements and services – some of primary concern to employees, others more important to the organisation and a handful, critical to both parties. Taxation falls into that latter category and Brexit promises to elevate the matter even further, with specific challenges and opportunities in the UK and across Europe.
At the insideMOBLITY® Brexit Consortium event taking place at the House of Commons on 15th May, Lord Callanan, Minister of State and Gareth Johnson MP, Parliamentary Private Secretary to David Davis, (both actively engaged with the Department for Exiting the European Union), will open an invite-only discussion on critical Mobility challenges raised by Brexit – including tax and immigration.
Though the final outcome of the Brexit negotiations on these and related matters is unclear, now is the time to gather information and consider the possible ways these issues unfold.
The present Chancellor seeks economic stability within an open, productive environment. This meeting will facilitate that process, so all parties can reduce uncertainty and unnecessary impediments to regional business operations.
Recent surveys conducted by insideMOBILITY have explored and prompted many important questions in this area, including:
- Should a business re-align its strategy around future trading arrangements? If so, how and when?
- With what tax regimes will global companies need to comply? Are there opportunities in this regard along with obstacles?
- Will there be a generic work permit system and, if so, what tax entitlements, benefits or commitments might accrue?
- What does the future of Social Security agreements look like and how will these programmes be linked to taxation?
- How should companies with cross-border employees efficiently structure their tax arrangements?
Ben Wilkins, Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), recently described the current imperative: “Brexit is not something you can deal with only functionally. It requires a re-orienting of attitude and aims. Employers must ask themselves, ‘What are the practical implications of Brexit? What do I need to do now to ensure my workforce can operate compliantly in the new environment? What should I do from a costing and process perspective? How can I turn Brexit to my advantage?’”
While it may seem there are more questions than answers at this time, experts at the Brexit Consortium will add clarity and perspective to taxation and other post-Brexit issues.
